Professional Laser Tattoo Removal in St. Louis

Studies and surveys indicate that approximately 10% of the United States population has artistic tattoos. Of this group, it is estimated that at least 50% will at some point want their tattoos removed. Laser tattoo removal is one of the newer techniques in cosmetic skincare. In the past, tattoo removal was performed via other methods that included dermabrasion, salabrasion, surgery, cryosurgery, or the use of trichloroacetic acid. These techniques were crude and focused on the removal of top layers of the skin, rather than selectively removing just the tattoo ink.

How Does Laser Tattoo Removal Work?

Laser tattoo removal works by applying high intensity light of different wavelengths to the tattooed area in order to eliminate pigments and colors. Different colors absorb different wavelengths of light; so every tattoo removal procedure must be customized to accommodate the colors of various tattoos. The process is known as selective photothermolysis. It involves the tattoo ink absorbing the laser light wavelength and as the absorption of light quickly converts to heat… the ink particles are fractured. This process initiates an inflammatory process that ultimately results in the absorption of the ink particles. By repeating this process every several weeks, the body gradually removes the tattoo ink from visibility, leaving the skin healthy.

As you can imagine, tattoo removal needs to be performed carefully and by a professional. It is important to find a specialist with experience who can perform the procedure meticulously. At Midwest Vein Care, we follow strict guidelines to ensure the safety and comfort of our patients.

  • Before we begin any tattoo removal procedure, the patient’s eyes must be protected with goggles. The skin is then tested with the laser to discover any abnormal reactions and to determine the intensity of light that is suitable for the individual’s skin and ink color.
  • When the laser treatment begins, the patient will feel a sensation similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. This can be moderately to significantly uncomfortable.
  • The laser treatment is performed by rapidly applying pulses of light. The number of pulses required is determined by the size of the tattoo.
  • Once a treatment session is complete, the skin is soothed with ice to help reduce redness and swelling. An antibiotic cream or ointment is then applied. A bandage is fitted over the treatment site to protect the area and prevent exposure to the sun.
  • Laser tattoo removal usually requires multiple visits over which the tattoo will progressively become lighter, until it disappears entirely.

Is Laser Tattoo Removal Safe?

Laser tattoo removal has evolved significantly over the years. While in the past, this kind of treatment may have left significant scarring, it is now considered extremely safe when performed by an experienced  professional. There is minimal risk of permanent scarring with laser tattoo removal, especially in comparison with other techniques. Laser tattoo removal is also the most effective technique of its kind.

As with any kind of medical procedure, laser tattoo removal may have some temporary side effects. At the time of the treatment, the tattoo will become frosted and raised, with swelling, redness, and the potential for blistering and or bleeding.  Additionally, there remains a chance of transient hypopigmentation or hyperpigmentation, where the treated skin becomes a different shade compared to the rest of the body.

Side effects can be minimized and often avoided if an experienced specialist performs laser tattoo removal. At Midwest Vein Care, we have over 20 years of experience in the cosmetic skincare industry. Therefore, we can help achieve the best possible outcomes.
