Spider veins are tiny to small, abnormally dilated superficial veins in the skin. They appear as result of a multitude of factors and can be found on any area of the body, especially the lower extremities. Spider veins typically appear as a red or blue cluster of veins just underneath the skin, and can be linear, tree or spider appearing. While spider veins may have no medical implications, they can cause discomfort or bleeding, and they are well known to be undesirable and embarrassing secondary to their physical appearance. Types of Treatment for Spider Veins

Spider veins are a common condition that does not typically have serious medical consequences. The condition is extremely prevalent… more common in women, and related to heredity, standing, and pregnancy. There are many options for treating spider veins.

Spider Vein Treatments in St. Louis

Some of the most popular treatment options include:

  • Sclerotherapy: This is the most effective treatment for spider veins and we consider sclerotherapy to be the international gold standard. This treatment involves using tiny needles to very superficially inject the spider veins with an irritating chemical that will cause the vein to be injured, seal closed, and turn to scar tissue. The created sclerotic cord is then dissolved and resorbed by the body… removing the undesirable veins. This treatment option is quick, relatively pain free and safe… and can be performed in our office without any form of anesthesia. A patient may experience some short-term side effects as a result of this treatment for spider veins, including bruising, tenderness of treated veins, and transient light brown shading of the skin around the disappearing veins. Sclerotherapy is generally a small series of treatments done in 6-week intervals.
  • Laser Vein Removal: This treatment for spider veins is not invasive in any way and does not involve any injections. It is commonly used to treat individuals that have small spider veins, particularly those on the face. The process involves sending short bursts of light directly through the skin into the targeted veins. The heat from the laser treatment causes the veins to seal closed, and then be gradually dissolved and resorbed by the body. This treatment for spider veins is usually done in a small series of 30 minute sessions. Possible short-term side effects include swelling or redness of targeted area, transient skin discoloration and in rare cases, small blisters.
  • VeignGogh: VeinGogh is another treatment for spider veins that is primarily used on individuals suffering from small spider veins. The VeinGogh treatment uses a thin probe to send radiofrequency energy through the skin into the spider veins to coagulate and seal the veins closed. The overlying skin remains unaffected as a result. This treatment for spider veins causes minimal discomfort and is extremely consistent. It can be used to treat spider veins that have exhibited resistance to other forms of treatment for spider veins.
